Reality, Dreams, Awakening, and Death

He died in her dream,
Ne'er woke to reality.

The dream of death,
Awakened her reality.

The dead dream,
Awakened no reality.

The awakened dream,
Lay dead 'fore reality.

There are five good reasons why I liked this particular poem. One, its formulaic structure, almost like interwtined but complicated as well as inter-dependent equations. Secondly, its subdued ambiguity; for example, one can read the first stanza as both 'He was dreaming of her, with which he died - never having been able to realize his dream', and 'She had him come in dream, but that remained only there - not in reality'. Third, it is a thinking poem, which sets you to look inwards, and begin a journey through the uneven terrains and pathways of 'love'. Fourthly, it is an interesting comparison between 'sleep' and 'awakening' as well as 'dream' and 'reality' - paired with or running parallel with 'him' and 'her'. Lastly, its curt structure, tight metricity will surely attract anyone.
